networking with the Monk
Published on July 24, 2008 By the_Monk In Beta Feedback

1.  I disabled all port-forwaring, made sure NAT-filtering wasn't relaxed etc.  and made sure all firewalls etc. also enabled.

2.  Loaded SINS 1.1

3.  Clicked "Host Setup"

4.  Clicked "Run Hosting Test"  (making sure use "Alloy" was checked)

4.  After the test completed it showed "IP is not visible" in red next to "Hosting Capability"

5.  Attempted to host a game anyway, and it worked!

What all of this means?

If you were having hosting problems before you certainly shouldn't be having them anymore...

Even with everything on my network set to "normal operation" (ie. no port-forwarding and everything secured) Alloy had no issues tunneling past/through it all to make the connection.

Well done SD/IC!

EDIT:

Having said this, should anyone have any hosting/connecting issues with this beta at all, please post to this thread and we will get the issues solved for you.

Ironclad deserves all the credit.

I had wondered how long it'd take you to test it out Wasn't disappointed!

Definitely sounds promising!

I won't be around to play until the weekend.

I might be on ICO though, just for the "familiar faces"; although without the need for my hosting-help I doubt I'll have much to say...hehe

Nah, Monk does way more than I do. He sits in ICO lobby and everything, answering questions

wow Anny......our posts are almost splitting seconds now (18:21:08 - 18:21:22)...

...and no you don't, you can't just take the focus off of you that easily. You're here helping with much more than just hosting. You deserve a medal Anny, especially for the art of diplomacy you exercise. I tend to be more.... (how should I put this....hehe.....hell I'll blame it on having 3 children...lol) direct...that's it! hehe

I am gettign the same 'IP address not visible'' in red when I test, but it hasnt prevented me from joining a game, I havent tried to host yet though.

Well, this thread may be preserved for posterity...

Having said this, should anyone have any hosting/connecting issues with this beta at all, please post to this thread and we will get the issues solved for you.

I notice there's no posts about that here.

To Monk.

I have my ports fowarded correctly for sins. Does having these open ports pose a security risk ?
on Jul 27, 2008
P5yy,

Forwarded ports aren't much of a risk unless there is something actively "listening" for traffic on them (ie. SINS or other software listening on said ports). So if SINS isn't running...... you get the picture.

Personally, I do however disable all port-forwarding when I don't need it to be in place. (especially since these days it's usually a check-mark or two in one's router config)
