networking with the Monk

1.  I disabled all port-forwaring, made sure NAT-filtering wasn't relaxed etc.  and made sure all firewalls etc. also enabled.

2.  Loaded SINS 1.1

3.  Clicked "Host Setup"

4.  Clicked "Run Hosting Test"  (making sure use "Alloy" was checked)

4.  After the test completed it showed "IP is not visible" in red next to "Hosting Capability"

5.  Attempted to host a game anyway, and it worked!

What all of this means?

If you were having hosting problems before you certainly shouldn't be having them anymore...

Even with everything on my network set to "normal operation" (ie. no port-forwarding and everything secured) Alloy had no issues tunneling past/through it all to make the connection.

Well done SD/IC!

EDIT:

Having said this, should anyone have any hosting/connecting issues with this beta at all, please post to this thread and we will get the issues solved for you.

to get back on topic:

has anyone else noticed that you sometimes get kicked out of your own game, about 5 - 10 seconds after you created it. the only thing I can currently do is instantly checking the ready box. happened to a friend of mine too. I do have the "ip is not visible" thingy in the host capability tester.

the games however worked fine once started. a really strange problem. sorry if it has been adressed already, I took a quick look and couldnt find evidence.

Your ISP or the ROUTE your PC is taking to ICO may be rubbish!

Try running a "trace" to ICO's IP when that happens to see if there is a "bad hop" between your PC and ICO.

eg. (at the command-prompt)

tracert 38.98.152.153 <--- this will "trace" the route your PC takes to connect to ICO and will show any "bad router hops" along the way.

If it turns out there is a "bad hop" along the route, and this happens too often to deal with, you can add a "custom route" to your PC's route to shorten the route your PC takes to ICO and bypass said "bad hop".

If you don't undestand my suggestions........there is always google or wikipedia!    (I don't have the time to write another guide right now....)
